Kodiak,
Maya sometimes gets confused about the exact state of the bind pose and cant reach it due to the connections the rig adds. This problem is avoidable however (with any rig) by doing the following:

- In the Select By Name box, type
Code:
*bindPose*
and press enter. This selects all the bind poses in your scene. If for some reason you have multiple characters, you'll need to get the list of bind poses that cant be reached and select them precisely.
- Press Delete, to remove all the bind poses. Dont move your rig at all, things will not evaluate correctly for a moment. Your weighting will stay in the (temporarily broken) skin cluster.
- Select the new geometry and choose Add Selected Geometry from the Post-Rig menu. This creates new bind poses for all your meshes, adds your desired geometry, and generally makes things hunky dory again.
-Now you should be able to move your rig normally, with the same weighting and so forth.

This is what we do here, let us know if it doesnt work for you.
-Nat Stein
